Ethan's Covered Bridge Preschool Evaluation

A couple of weeks ago, Ethan had his Covered Bridge Preschool Evaluation.  He was among four kids being evaluated that Friday to see if they qualified for services.  Kenny took the day off so that he could attend the evaluation and meeting with me.  Right away, the kids were taken to the preschool room with a team of adults and the evaluations began.  We stayed behind, with the other parents, for a short meeting where they explained what we could expect, and to gather histories and other information regarding the children.  I have to say that Ethan was a little cutie pie!  He is used to working with a lot of therapists, so he had no problem marching into the room and completing various tasks.  We were told that one of the evaluators fell in love with him and wanted to take him home, which made us smile.  They also commented on how polite he was.  After our meeting, we were given a chance to observe through the window.  I noticed that he sat near the other kids, but didn't really ever interact with them, which is something they brought to our attention later.  The supervisor stated that he didn't initiate any activity with kids or adults.  He responded when approached, but was never the initiator.  He also had issues holding a crayon and pencil.  We knew all of these things to be true, and weren't surprised with the findings. 
Due to his developmental delays, he does not qualify for the language preschool alone, which is what we were hoping for.  He will probably, however, qualify for the developmental preschool at Carter's school, where he will be eligible to receive speech and occupational therapy.  So, that's not such a bad thing.  He is now scheduled for an in classroom evaluation at Rio Grande on October 14th.  If he qualifies, he will start preschool immediately.  He will follow Carter's school schedule and think that he is a big boy, going to school with his brother!  I will drop both of them off at 8:00 in the morning, and then pick Ethan up at 10:30, which gives me enough time to take him to his other therapy sessions at 11:00 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. 
I have my fingers crossed that all of this works out.  I think that Ethan would absolutely love preschool.  I will be sad not to have him with me every morning, but will enjoy the one-on-one time with Jacob.  Regardless, Ethan has made so much progress and continues to make us proud every day!
