See the shrubs in the picture? Well, they're barberries that were planted by the previous homeowner. Kenny absolutely hates them! They are thorny, look horrible in the winter, and the ones we had at our old house attracted wasps. Not excactly the welcoming plants that you want to line your front walk. The weather was a lot cooler today than it has been, so Kenny recruited Carter to help him rip out the old shrubs and prepare the ground for getting new ones. We plan to plant boxwoods, which are green year round and are more kid friendly.
Carter was really working hard, and then all of a sudden, when he started on the last plant, a swarm of bees attacked. I was at the dining room table and heard him screaming and then saw him running past the window. I ran outside to see what was happening and that's when I saw all of the bees stinging Carter and the dog. Poor Riley was trying to protect Carter and suffered the most attacks. We quickly got all three boys and the dog into the house and noticed that Carter had been stung 4 times and one of the stingers was still in his leg. We applied a baking soda mixture to the stings, but Carter said they were still pretty painful. Later on, Carter removed 8-10 stingers from Riley's nose and ears.
Kenny stayed outside to battle the bees and ended up being stung on the chin. I ran to Menard's and purchased more bee killer. Then, as the sun was going down, Kenny coated the entire area with the killer, so hopefully the bees will not be a problem tomorrow.
One of the neighbors had heard Carter's screams, followed by Kenny spraying something, and concluded that Carter must have been stung. Later on, she brought us brownies and told us that chocolate makes everything better. That was super sweet! She also told us that if we ever need anything, don't hesitate to ask. We left really great neighbors at our other house, so it's nice to know that we have good neighbors here too.
Carter is already running around crazy, so the stings have not gotten him down...not that we thought they would.
Oh my goodness Hope! How awful! Poor Carter. Tell him we're sorry he got stung. (Actually, I think the kids had more sympathy for the dog, which is scary). Hope you guys are enjoying the last bits of summer!
