Today was another Tot Time at the museum. This one dealt with bugs, which Ethan and Jacob love, so they were extremely excited about it. Tot Time starts at 10:30, which now conflicts with Ethan's speech at the Rowe Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:00. I cut it close today by rushing out of Tot Time and actually made it to speech about 3 minutes late. Luckily, it is literally down the road, so I will do my best to squeeze them both in every other Tuesday.
Miss Abby started out the lesson by reading the kids a book about bugs. Then, she brought out Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. There were a few large ones and some babies as well. She held the container out so that the kids could take turns looking at them.
When the kids came back to the tables, they were given supplies to make their own bug boxes. The boxes were made using old plastic baby food containers that had holes poked in the lids. All of the kids got sticky jewels and foam bug stickers to decorate with.
Once the boxes were complete, the kids went on a "bug hunt". Miss Rachel had hidden plastic bugs around the room and they were allowed to find two of them to keep in their boxes. Ethan and Jacob loved it!
Finally, right before it was time for us to rush to speech, Miss Abby took one of the Hissing Cockroaches out so that the kids could observe it closely and touch it if they wanted to. Right after I took the picture above, the cockroach darted because of all of the little hands coming toward it and fell to the floor. I was nervous that in an attempt to get away, the kids would step on it, but thankfully, he was rescued with no harm done!
