Ethan is doing so well with his therapies! I was talking to the supervisor at the Rowe Center today, and she said that she was very impressed with his progress. She also asked me if we were considering the Covered Bridge preschool. It is a free program for children with various special needs, and the preschools are located in the elementary school buildings. There happens to be one at Carter's school. The specialists at Riley Children's Hospital told us that Ethan is perfectly capable of attending a regular preschool. He is on top of things cognitively and is very social. He may require assistance with some of the fine motor skills, but most young children do, so it shouldn't be a problem. His speech is rapidly improving, so he should be just slightly behind the other kids in that area. The supervisor said that if we were to pursue the Covered Bridge preschool, that there would be a possibility that Ethan wouldn't even qualify. That was GREAT news! She said that she would most likely recommend regular preschool for him and commented on his excellent receptive language and listening skills. It made me feel wonderful to hear all of the positive things that she had to say about my little boy.
I got a call last week from Dr. Stanley's office at Riley. She wants Ethan to have a physical therapy evaluation to address his low muscle tone. We are in the process of getting new insurance, so I will hold off on that for a couple of weeks, in the hopes that it will be covered. If he qualifies for services, we will definitely have a full schedule! Right now, he has speech three times a week, and occupational therapy once a week. I enjoy taking him to therapy and learning new strategies to help him overcome the obstacles he faces. I am also very thankful for the clinicians who are eager to work with him. They all have his best interest at heart and care about him deeply. It warms my heart to know that he feels loved by so many wonderful people!
